After our overnight stay at the Borneo Nature Lodge on the Kinabatangan River, Sabah, we travelled back to Sandakan for a sightseeing tour and overnight stay.

The journey back to Sandakan included a guided visit to the Gomantong Cave, including a fantastic walk through the pristine rainforest, including the opportunity to view local wildlife. We were rewarded with plenty of wildlife sightings, many partly hidden in the trees. Easy to sight wildlife but much more difficult to take good photos. However many good visual sightings, most not caught on camera.

This especially goes for the special 'white' nests that sell for well over $1000 per kilo. Twice a year (between February and April & July and September) licensed locals climb to retrieve nests.

This looks amazing, both the rainforest walk and cave :)

Thanks Sarah, we loved the Boardwalk, the cave an experience - however I would recommend forget the cave!

I love boardwalks through the forest. Mangrove swamps are my favourite :)
We enjoyed our relaxing holiday on Borneo but would love to go back one day and experience an adventure like what you have done mate.
Cheers,
Ann.

Hi Ann,

Thanks for visiting, you have visited SEA many times and know the importance of avoiding the rainy season.

Mike, this looks like a totally fascinating and exotic destination.

Hi Don, Thanks for visiting. We travel to Asia frequently and have visited Kota Kinabalu several times - 2013 & 2016.In 2014 we visited the memorial of the WW2 Death March at Ranau (finish) and we thought this trip we would visit the memorial in Sandakan. However our guide said he was not allowed to take tourists to the memorial.

KK offers much for tourist, pristine rainforest and fantasti wildlife!
